Meet my service dog, Osko

Osko is a long-haired German shepherd, dedicated working partner, and deeply loved companion who brings confidence, mobility, and joy to my life every single day.

A life-changing partnership

Osko assists me with mobility and independence on a daily basis. He provides balance and bracing support, assists with forward momentum while walking and climbing steps, and offers deep pressure therapy whenever needed. Incredibly intuitive and attentive, Osko recognizes subtle shifts when I begin leaning or losing balance, quickly helping me stay upright. Having him by my side enables me to move through the world with confidence.

Off-duty charm and big personality

While Osko takes his work very seriously when he is on duty, his personality shines brightly when he takes his vest off. Off duty, he is wonderfully goofy, highly opinionated, dramatic, and exceptional at letting his feelings be known. After years together, he has grown into far more than a service dog—he is a loyal companion, steady friend, and treasured part of my daily family life.

Service dog etiquette and guidelines

The most important thing for readers—especially children and teens—to understand is that a service dog is actively working, even when lying down quietly. Please avoid petting, calling, whistling at, or offering food to a working dog. Distractions can interrupt life-saving focus and essential tasks. Always speak directly to the handler first and ask before interacting, so both dog and handler can stay safe.
